WHY WE WANT ONE

RUSTY INDEX

RUSTY INDEX

Would we put our own money on it?

THIS WEEK : RENAULTSPORT CLIO 182

Good Car? Wrong Question. Is there money in it?

DOES THE MATHS WORK?

RUSTY INDEX Score - THE SCORE? WE'RE NOT TELLING YOU HERE.

UNLOCK THE SCORE

who we are

WHO THE HELL ARE WE?

Petrolheads. Traders. Fixers. Flippers. Hustlers. We live in the bit of the car world where the numbers have to work — buying, selling, fixing, checking, negotiating and discovering that an “easy fix” has somehow become a weekend.

NO GATEKEEPING

CarADHD isn’t a trade-only club. First-car buyers, family-car hunters, modifiers, collectors, van drivers and 2am Marketplace scrollers — your budget doesn’t decide whether you belong.

NO SNOBBERY. NO BULLSHIT.

A badge is not a personality. If it’s shite, we’ll say it. If it’s brilliant, we’ll tell you why.

THE FORMULA

USEFUL ENOUGH TO TRUST.

CarADHD gives you real-world car knowledge without turning ownership into homework. Buying advice, faults, values, clues and the stuff that actually matters when you’re spending your own money.

CARCLUE

The knowledge engine behind CarADHD — THE FUTURE YOU NEVER KNEW. Better information, better questions and better decisions before you buy, sell or own.

CHAOTIC ENOUGH TO REMEMBER.

Freddie’s Eye. Specky’s Spots. Car Sniffer. Shite or Shine? M.I.A. The Dusty Keys. Granny Test. Pub Argument. The Scrap Heap. Serious knowledge, delivered with personality.

Who We Are

CarADHD is a community-driven platform dedicated to enthusiasts and everyday car owners alike. We thrive on honesty, passion, and a shared love for all things automotive. Our approach is straightforward: no gatekeeping, no snobbery, just real talk and genuine connections.

REAL CARS. REAL KNOWLEDGE. ZERO BULLSHIT

THE £500 HERO

THE £500 CAR ISN’T DEAD. YOUR EXPECTATIONS MIGHT BE.

At £500 you are not buying perfection. You’re buying remaining useful life. That pushes shiny paint and fancy options down the list and moves structure, cooling, oil pressure, tyres, brakes, clutch, gearbox, warning lights, service history and MOT story right to the top.

Our Mk5 Golf is the perfect guinea pig because it’s gloriously ordinary. That’s the point. Ordinary cars keep Britain moving.

the walkaround

START WITH THE CAR. NOT THE SELLER’S NOVEL.

Stand back first. Does it sit level? Are the panel gaps broadly consistent? Are the tyres sensible pairs and wearing evenly? Then get close: corrosion, damaged lamps, fresh underseal, loose trim and poor repairs all deserve questions.

FREDDIE’S EYE 👁️

One clue rarely decides a car. Patterns do. Rust on an outer arch is one thing. Rust plus repeated advisories plus suspicious fresh coating underneath is a story.

REMEMBER THAT RUSTY CORNER. FREDDIE COMES BACK LATER.

tHE ROAD TEST

TURN THE RADIO OFF. YES, EVEN IF IT’S A BANGER.

Cold start if possible. Listen before touching the throttle. Does it fire cleanly? Any metallic rattle, smoke or warning lights?

On the road, use every gear you safely can. Feel the clutch, steering and brakes. Find a rougher road and listen to the suspension. Once warm, let the engine work under load. Then stop, restart hot and look underneath again.

The road test isn’t there to make you fall in love. It’s evidence gathering with a steering wheel.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

 “Drives mint” remains legally undefined.

WALK AWAY POWER

If basic checks aren’t allowed, the answer got easier.

the paper trail

SERVICE HISTORY ISN’T SEXY. NEITHER IS A £2,000 SURPRISE.

Paperwork should tell roughly the same story as the car. Receipts, stamped history, MOT records and recent work don’t need to be perfect, but contradictions matter.

A £500 car with evidence of regular oil changes can be a more sensible gamble than a shinier £900 car whose history begins with the sentence “lost the book mate”.

And don’t add every invoice up and assume it increases value pound-for-pound. Maintenance often protects value rather than creates it.

REAL COST

Purchase + day-one jobs + reserve. That is your real budget.

WALLET WARNING

Old car maths gets rude when you forget the reserve fund.

DON'T BE A DAFTY

FIVE WAYS TO CREATE A DRIVEWAY ORNAMENT.

  1. Buy the badge instead of the condition.
  2. Ignore repeated MOT advisories because “it passed”.
  3. Skip the cold start because you’re excited.
  4. Assume low mileage automatically means good.
  5. Spend the whole budget and leave nothing for repairs.

TYRE OF THE WEEK

"Plenty of tread, mate." Meanwhile the tyre has left the chat.

don't be a dafty part 2

FIVE MORE WAYS TO SET FIRE TO MONEY

  1. Believe “easy fix” without diagnosing it.
  2. Forget four tyres can wipe out your negotiation win.
  3. Rush the test drive.
  4. Ignore paperwork because the seller seems sound.
  5. Buy because you’ve travelled too far to go home empty-handed.

seller

 Probably just a sensor.

CARADHD

Lovely. Why haven’t you fixed it then?

FREDDIE’S EYE

WHAT QUESTION DOES THIS CLUE MAKE YOU ASK?

Freddie’s Eye is observation training, not magic diagnosis.

Visible bubbling around an arch should make you ask what’s happening behind it. Is it outer-panel corrosion only?

What does the sill and inner arch look like? Has the same area appeared in MOT advisories?

Your job isn’t to guess a repair bill from a photograph. Your job is to know where to look next.

no cheating

Zoom in like your wallet depends on it. Reveal later.

£500 BUY PRICE

£1,000 REAL EXPOSURE

£1,000 REAL EXPOSURE

 The seductive number.

 + £120 immediate service allowance
+ £180 tyre/brake reserve
+ £200 contingency

£1,000 REAL EXPOSURE

£1,000 REAL EXPOSURE

£1,000 REAL EXPOSURE

The number your wallet actually cares about.

If the car can’t make sense at £1,000 total exposure, the £500 purchase price is lying to you.

CLUED UP RED, AMBER, OR “I’LL DEAL WITH IT NEXT MONTH”?

CLUED UP

Warning lights are information, not decoration. Red can indicate conditions where continuing to drive risks safety or serious damage. Amber usually means diagnose promptly rather than panic.

The icon isn’t a repair quote. Scan the car, inspect the relevant system and interpret the code in context. Clearing a code isn’t repairing a fault.

CLUED UP RULE

Diagnose first. Price second. Fire the parts cannon never.

PART OF THE WEEK

TIMING CHAIN: WHAT IT DOES AND WHY YOU CARE.

TIMING CHAIN: WHAT IT DOES AND WHY YOU CARE.

TIMING CHAIN: WHAT IT DOES AND WHY YOU CARE.

The timing system keeps the crankshaft and camshaft(s) synchronised so pistons and valves move in the correct relationship. A chain is metal and often designed for long service, but guides, tensioners, sprockets and lubrication matter too.

Depending on the engine, trouble can show as cold-start rattle, persistent metallic noise, timing-related fault codes or poor running. Severe timing errors can cause major internal damage on interference engines.

LISTEN/HISTORY

TIMING CHAIN: WHAT IT DOES AND WHY YOU CARE.

TIMING CHAIN: WHAT IT DOES AND WHY YOU CARE.

  •  Cold-start rattle deserves investigation.
  •  Correct oil servicing can matter massively.

CHAIN VS BELT

DIFFERENT HARDWARE. SAME BASIC JOB.

Belts are toothed reinforced belts normally replaced to an age/mileage schedule. Chains usually run inside the lubricated engine and often last longer. Neither statement tells you whether a specific used car is safe to buy. Research the exact engine family.

BONUS 30-SECOND BRAKES

Disc gives the pad a surface, caliper squeezes, pad creates friction, car slows down. If the pedal, noise or pull feels wrong, investigate it — braking is not the system for “see how it goes”.

NEXT RABBIT HOLE

Wet belts. Because apparently normal timing belts weren’t stressful enough.

M.I.A - MISSING IN AUTOMOTIVE

FIAT STILO

Golf rival. Focus rival. Astra rival. Then Britain forgot where it parked.

RENAULT VEL SATIS

Renault looked at the executive-car rulebook and put it through a shredder.

THE CARS THAT VANISHED WHILE NOBODY WAS LOOKING.

THE CARS THAT VANISHED WHILE NOBODY WAS LOOKING.

THE CARS THAT VANISHED WHILE NOBODY WAS LOOKING.

One minute they’re everywhere. Then one passes and you realise you haven’t seen another in a year.

M.I.A. celebrates ordinary cars becoming unusual.

Rare and desirable are not the same thing. But disappearing cars can become culturally interesting because they’re the ones people actually learned in, went to work in, filled with kids and eventually scrapped without ceremony.
